Iconography
For me, iconography is a form of symbolic stylized art which represents a holy event, a holy person by church doctrine or the holy words of the Bible. It is art that moves your soul, inspires you to prayer or inspires you to live a life walking with God.
Icons are traditionally written in the style of Byzantine Art which roughly spans from the 4th century AD to the 15th century AD. The earliest Icons are found in the Roman catacombs from the 2nd century forward. They are said to be written because that is the definition of the Greek word Icon which means to write, describe or represent.
Icons are traditionally created on specially prepared boards with paint that is made from natural earth pigments mixed with egg yolk. Additionally, 23K gold leaf is used. Many thin layers of paint are used to create the visual atmosphere in an icon.
I began studying iconography in 2002. Since that time I have taken many classes and spent numerous hours studying and researching the subject on my own. It is a form of meditation which I thoroughly enjoy. My work has been commissioned and sold.
I share my knowledge of icons in workshops through St. David’s Institutes at St. David’s by the Sea in Cocoa Beach, FL. If you live in Central Florida and would like to join a workshop, please contact me for my schedule: contact

In traditional iconography, linear perspective is not used intentionally. The purpose is to allow the subject matter of the icons to come forward to the viewer.
